Coffee Breaks in Tokyo

29 Jun

IMG_9396lores

For me and my husband, coffee breaks are like pressing the pause button on your DVD player.  Hehe! Time to space out yo! 🙂

I was so glad we were able to drink lots of coffee in Japan this trip.  The last time I was in Japan, I was six months preggers and I couldn’t find any coffee shop that served decaf.  Haha!  I don’t think the Japanese like decaf.  Starbucks had to brew a special cup for me at that time.  I remember having a major breakdown when we couldn’t find a coffee shop that had decaf.  LOL!

But this time around, we drank the strongest, blackest coffee Tokyo could give.  Haha!  Here are some of the cafes we came across during our wandering walks in Tokyo 🙂

Here’s a cafe somewhere in Harajuku…

Somewhere in Harajuku…  This was a tight one 🙂  We were so close to the people seated at the tables beside us.  Kulang na lang, mainom ko kape nila.  LOL!

I Miss My Tokyu Hands

26 Jun

tokyuhands

One of the things I miss the most in Tokyo is TOKYU HANDS.  Their motto is so true….

“When you visit, you find what you want!”

And you can lose some calories, too, because Tokyu Hands has about 7-9 floors of stuff I love… from arts and crafts to clown makeup to little gadgets and cameras to leather swatches… Ugh… love love love Tokyu Hands.  My husband also loved the hardware and also the section that’s dedicated to shoe care 🙂

photo 3

I didn’t take that much photos of the store itself because I was just so overwhelmed with all the stuff you can find here.  It’s so convenient!  I mean, if you were to start a project, you can find everything you need in one place.  It’s just so amazing.

They even have on-going workshops within the store.  I can stay here all day, I tell you! 🙂

photo 1

I think they were making leather wallets 🙂

photo 2

This one, I wasn’t sure what they were making 🙂 So fun!!

Out of all the stuff I saw in Tokyu Hands, I was hooked on these Hooked Zpagetti crochet hooks!!! Got me some new hooks, 10mm and 12mm sizes to match…

IMG_8997lores

…these Hooked Zpagetti yarn/cloth.  It’s like shredded cloth!  But the label says high quality recycled cotton 🙂 I had to jump for joy when I saw these… (deep inside. Haha!)

IMG_8996lores

These were the chosen ones…

I’m planning to make tote bags out of these!  They might be too heavy/warm for a scarf unless it’s thin.  I’m so excited to start my Tote Project!  Haha! 🙂  Watch out for it!

Have a happy Wednesday to you all! 🙂

A Walking Tour of Shimokitazawa

23 Jun

IMG_9101lores

Shimokitazawa… One of the highlights of my Tokyo trip!  Absolutely love this charming little place!  Shimokitazawa is located in Setagaya, Tokyo.  We didn’t know exactly where to go after we got out of the train station.  So we just followed the flock of young people and the shops and cafes were just around the corner 🙂

IMG_9020lores

Shimokitazawa is similar to Harajuku but it’s less crowded and more intimate 🙂  A lot of the stores sell used clothing, shoes and accessories as well brand new items.  Some stores sell goods from around the globe, like India, Mexico and Africa.  Take a walk with me and I’ll show you some of the interesting things I saw .  Warning:  this post is photo heavy.  Hehe!

You’ll never get thirsty here in Tokyo.

IMG_9054lores

I loved how this store looked, Fig London.  Looked like a little country home 🙂

IMG_9058lores

Don’t forget to look up!  There are stores also on the second floor! 🙂

Some stores look so small from the outside but once you enter, it’s a like a cave of great finds!!!  Like this shop.  Can’t read their super faded sign though 🙂

Village Vanguard Diner

22 Jun

IMG_9063lores

I am still going through a Tokyo hangover.  After being there for five days, it still wasn’t enough. Haha!

The first place I would like to share with you is Shimokitazawa.  I looooove Shimo!!!  Thanks so much for taking me there, Dante!  (My husband, the best tour guide ever!)

Shimokitazawa is such a charming place with cute stores that sell vintage items, used and unused and other kawaii things!!! 🙂  Will be posting the stores in a separate entry.  Hihi… It’s quite a lot.  But before exploring Shimo inside out, lunch muna!!!

IMG_9060lores

Check out the sign that says: Vilids Varnga:d 🙂 Hehe love the direct translation! 🙂

What I love about travelling with Dante is, anything goes 🙂 We saw a “home made hamburgers” sign outside a resto called Village Vanguard Diner.  Done.  Lunch will be here at “Vilids Varnga!”  🙂

IMG_9061lores

So excited for lunch!  I love these basement establishments.  It looks small from the outside…

IMG_9062lores

But it actually is so spacious! 🙂  I love the diner vibe of this place.

All lunch meals come with a drink 🙂 We chose Iced Coffee.  I must say, they have really good coffee everywhere in Tokyo!

IMG_9068lores

Their menu was inserted in a photo album 🙂

IMG_9069lores

Lots of reading materials.

IMG_9072lores

Dante ordered the Village Vanguard Special.  It had some special sauce inside.

IMG_9074lores

IMG_9079lores

And I had a cheeseburger.  I was tempted to try their specialty, burger with avocados.

But avocados are fattening right??? Haha! AS IF! 🙂  When I’m more adventurous next time 🙂

IMG_9075lores

Even the buns were so good and buttery! I liked Dante’s order better because it was tastier but they were both really really good! 🙂

IMG_9077lores

Time for my Iced Coffee to get me ready for exploring Shimokitazawa!!! That was a winner lunch! 🙂  You must try out their burgers if you’re in the area!  Village Vanguard is located in Setagaya-ku, Daita 6-3-1 B1.

To find out where it is exactly, click HERE for the map 🙂

More of Shimokitazawa to come! 🙂

Wicked Emerald Garden

5 Jun

IMG_8287lores

Another random Sunday evening, my husband picked me up from work in Manila, and took me to this place called Emerald Garden for dinner.  Classic, good ol’ Chinese food!

IMG_8289lores

Reminded me of “Wicked”… Emerald City!  Everything was green.  Made me want to sing… “Something has changed within me…” LOL!

IMG_8295lores

They’re apparently known for their siopao but unfortunately, they had none left at that time.  The waiter said the siopao gets sold out in the morning.  So if ever we wanted siopao, we had to come in the morning 🙂  Lesgooooow.  So in the meantime, we just ordered our all-time favorites!  They were all delicious!!!

IMG_8300lores

Emerald Veggies 🙂

IMG_8303lores

Century Egg (P50)

IMG_8306lores

It’s a Coke Zero kind of night.

IMG_8308lores

Diced Chicken with Cashew Nuts (P190)

IMG_8315lores

Sweet and Sour Pork (P190)

IMG_8298lores

Yang Chow! 🙂

IMG_8316lores

Winter Melon Soup with Dried Scallops and Black Mushrooms P240

IMG_8319lores

Everything we ordered were the smallest sizes.  But I didn’t expect the servings to be so big! Sulit.  Again, we ordered food good for four people.  Haha! And this is what we always say after over ordering:  “We can always take it home.” which always eventually translates to: “We might as well finish it because this won’t be good anymore when re-heated.” LOL!

IMG_8321lores

This is the perfect Chinese resto for families and big groups.  The restaurant is two floors and the place was packed.  I would definitely want to go back to try their siopao!!! One of these days, I will get up early to eat breakfast in Emerald 🙂 (I can already hear Dante saying… “Yeah, right… wake up early???” Hehe…

Check out their contact details below 🙂
